Professional Development Day Land-Based activity for Educators

PD Day Activity for Educators – April 7/25

“The focus of this Professional Development Day (PD Day) was providing an opportunity for staff to learn a new skill while promoting team building, sharing strengths, laughter, and building confidence. When an activity of this sort (traditional) is planned at the school for students, staff will be better able to assist”, remarked Principal Becky Toulouse. Professional Development (PD) Day involved staff at Biidaaban learning about traditional medicine, medallions, bone choker neck bands/regalia, quill art to support them when providing instruction to students and offered team building as well.

Presenter, Marcel Toulouse, spoke about the traditional medicines, and staff were taught to make a medicine bag. Presenters, Myna and Theodore Toulouse, shared their quill knowledge assisting Staff to make medallions.

Land-Based Lead, Michael Abitong, spoke about bone chokers and their significant spiritual, ceremonial, and cultural importance. Staff then had their choice to make a choker necklace or bracelet using an assortment of beads resembling the traditional bone/coloured beads used.

Principal Becky commented that the day was very relaxing; great conversations and learning took place!

Land-Based Lead, Michael Abitong, provided training to Biidaaban staff on the tradition of bone chokers, and the design/creation.

The second part of the PD Day - the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) workshop, was postponed and held on May 21, during Education Month. Education Staff attended a presentation given by Children's Community Network representative, Jenne Atkinson, as part of their professional development training, with community members being invited to attend an evening information and 1:1 consultation session from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Biidaaban. This was a great opportunity for staff, parents, and caregivers to receive information about Autism Spectrum Disorder and other neurodivergences, ask questions, gain support, and build connections with others who may also care for a child or family member with ASD.
