Daycare Kids Go Strawberry Picking!

July 8th, 2026, a nice sunny Wednesday morning, the Daycare kids went on a field trip to Emiry’s Berry Patch to pick some strawberries. Hands-on learning is very important for early childhood development, helping with things such as motor skills, using their hands, and learning many other tasks they will end up doing in everyday life. Learning words in Anishinaabemowin, Such as ode’imin (strawberry), wiisnin (eat), and nimadabin (sit down), being mindful not to squash the fragile plants as they search for the ripe berries. The daycare Educators helped the young friends learn how to gently lift the plants to search for the biggest, reddest berries and chuckled at the facial expressions of the friends who were tasting the flavour of the strawberries for the first time. It was an exciting time for Friends and Helpers alike! Staff members from Wasseyaankaan Teg were also out for the excursion, supporting the Friends and Educators as they followed up their teaching about ode’imin. Helping the adults put strawberries in the baskets, eating strawberries, saying hi to a horse, and even throwing hay at each other were all parts of the experience.
